IB

IB applications are coming up for 10th grade students! Here is an overview of our IB program

CHCP International Baccalaureate (IB) Program

What is the International Baccalaureate (IB)?

Cypress Hills Collegiate Prep is proud to be an IB World School. The IB is a globally recognized program used in over 160 countries. At its heart, it’s about a simple idea students learn best when they are encouraged to think for themselves, ask big questions, and connect what they learn in class to the real world.

Why Choose IB for Your Child?

We chose the IB program because it goes beyond just preparing students for a test. It prepares them for life after high school. Whether your child is heading to a four-year college or starting a career, IB helps them build the confidence and skills they need to succeed.
Through this program, our students:

  • Master the reading and writing skills expected in college.
  • Learn how to manage their time and work on projects independently.
  • Earn a diploma that is respected by universities all over the world.

The IB Experience at CHCP

Every student at CHCP takes at least one IB course (English Language and Literature). For students who want an even bigger challenge, we offer the full IB Diploma Programme during 11th and 12th grade.

This isn't just about harder homework. It's about being part of a supportive, close-knit group. Our IB Diploma cohort has about 25 students per grade. These students take their classes together, helping each other grow, solve problems, and prepare for the future.

The Six Subjects Your Child Will Study

Full Diploma students study these six areas:

  • English Language & Literature: Reading and analyzing different types of writing to become a stronger communicator.
  • History of the Americas: Learning how to look at historical evidence and build an argument.
  • Spanish: Building real-world conversation skills and understanding different cultures.
  • Math: Applying math to solve real-world problems.
  • Biology: Exploring science through hands-on lab work and experiments.
  • Film: Studying how movies tell stories and creating original creative projects.
  • Theory of Knowledge (TOK): A class that asks, "How do we know what we know?" It encourages students to think critically about information.

The "Core" Requirements

In addition to classes, students complete three unique requirements that make the IB special:

  • The Extended Essay: Students choose a topic they love and write a college-style research paper with the help of a teacher.
  • CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service): This takes learning outside the classroom. Students participate in art, sports, leadership, and community service.

The Benefits: College Credit and Support

Students who do well in IB can earn significant college credit. For example, CUNY and SUNY schools often award credits to IB Diploma graduates, which can save families thousands in tuition.

Because the program is demanding, we provide extra support, including:

  • Study hall time during the school day.
  • Workshops on stress and time management.
  • A dedicated IB Library for studying and collaborating.
  • Trips, pep rallies, and community-building events.

How to Apply

Students apply for the full Diploma program in the spring of 10th grade. We look for students who are hardworking and ready for a challenge. Most students who apply are accepted!

The application includes:

  • A simple application form.
  • A record of your Regents exams (passing your Regents is the best way to show you’re ready).
  • A short essay about your strengths.
  • Two recommendations from your current teachers.
